Choosing a Repairer
If your main priority when making an insurance claim, is to save costs then you may be tempted to allow your insurer to select a repairer of their choice.
If on the other hand you are more concerned with quality of repair, quality of parts used quality of service then it is always better to use an independent repairer who will not be subjected to various constraints of an 'approved' repairer.

Your Rights
In an agreement between ABI (Association of British Insurers) and OFT (Office of Fair Trading) set out below that gives everyone the right to choose their own repairer which means your insurer cannot insist you use their chosen system or repairer and you will only require one assessment from your chosen repairer.
Motorists Information.
The motor vehicle insurance policy holder has the right to choose the repairer who they wish to carry out the required repairs and is not obliged to use only the insurance companies appointed repairer.
This has been agreed between the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The only exception is where this, for commercial reasons, has been made an express condition of the policy and has been written into the insurance policies terms and conditions to which the policy holder has been made aware.
